Local Government & Governance
On February 19 LFP’s Khanewal Chapter organized a seminar on the subject of “Local Government & Governance”. Mr. Peer Ahmed Nadeem Bodla District Nazim Khanewal, Mr. Zia Haider Zaidi President District Bar Khanewal, Rao Akram Khurram Advocate Board Member LFP, Ms. Bushra Ideal activist and Ms. Bismillah Iram Spoke to the seminar.
Syed Furakh Raza welcome the participants and introduced the LFP functioning and values of liberalism. Ms. Bissmillah Iram presented the liberal point of view on the subject “Local Government & Governance”. She added meaning full decentralization and devolution enhance the capacity of citizens for meaning full participation in the society.
Ms. Bushra Ideal said Local government system gave the representation to the women, minorities and peasant to participate in the decision making process at local level & enhance the capacity for their active participation. She further said local government system involved the common man but now the democratic government promotes the beauecrat attitude again.
Malik Masood said governance through 2001 Local Government system was hundred time better then earlier system. Local government system means involve the common man in decision making process and enhance the capacity of the citizens at all level so everyone take part in the system. He further point out the main causes of bad governance & why not this system implemented with full of its spirit. He added lack of awareness was the main cause of bad governance.
Mr. Akram Khurram said these systems promote democracy, it encourages the community to participate in Government decision making process; he further said local government system promotes accountability by civil servants and elected officials, it promotes service & delivery.
Mr. Zia Haider said responsibility has given to the elected representative but the elected representatives were not awaked about their responsibilities that raised the corruption in the system.
Dr. Salamat Ali said majority of the prevailing laws we have taken from the British colonial period. Just because of our elected representatives could not deliver to the public and fulfilled their promises.
Mr. Tahir Naseem appreciated the LFP efforts in the district and said just because of present role of civil society in the public awaked the general public about their rights and responsibilities; that will lead to change our attitude.
Mr. Peer Ahmad Nadeem Bodla said decentralization and local government system has given an opportunity to the citizens to involve in the decision making process.
Mr. Shahbaz Awan said LFP supports to the local government system in Pakistan. He added elected representative utilized budget to the need of community. He further said if we want to corruption free society they we should promote democratic system.
Khanewal Chapter Elects New Office-Bearers
On February 19, Mr. Rao Akram Khurram Board Member LFP attended a meeting convened by the LFP Khanewal Chapter to elect office bearers for the year 2010.
Ms. Bismillah Iram was unanimously elected as the President, while Mr. Farrukh Raza as the General Secretary, and Mr. Salamat Ali Sindhu as the Information Secretary.
The newly elected persons & Board Member LFP spoke on the occasion, and discussed ways to more effectively organize the Chapter locally.
